Press Release:

GAAP Orphanage Foundation embarks on exciting new chapter

Construction of landmark educational centre underway

Premier league footballer, Peter Odemwingie appointed charity patron

Launch of brand new website, Twitter accounts and YouTube channels

Major fundraising initiatives commenced with goal to raise £100,000

The GAAP Orphanage Foundation has embarked on an exciting new phase in its history with construction of a children’s educational centre and the appointment of Premier League and Nigeria international football star, Peter Odemwingie as patron.

The charity, which was founded in 2008, delivers relief to children abandoned or orphaned as a result of war, economical and social factors. In its first five years it embarked on a wide-ranging programme of capacity building and support projects for orphanages, including the provision of food, clothing, educational support as well as medicine and healthcare.

And now, in its biggest project to date, the charity has begun construction of a £100,000 education resource centre, which will serve as a platform to empower young Africans who have been blighted by a poor start to life.

The GAAP Education Centre will provide education and health screenings to vulnerable children and also give training to orphanage support staff so they are better placed to address the day-to-day needs of children in their care. Skilled, qualified teachers and healthcare professionals from the UK and Nigeria will deliver this training.

GAAP Founder, Abbey Orebanwo said: “The bleak reality is that many, if not most orphanages in Nigeria are not fit-for-purpose. These organisations need help and support to bring themselves up to a standard, to give their children not only a chance to exist, but also to thrive and have opportunities to excel in life. This is where GAAP Orphanage Foundation has helped in the past – but now it is time to do even more!”

Stoke City and Nigeria international footballer said: “I am proud to be the patron of the GAAP Orphanage Foundation. When I heard about the wonderful work that the charity has done and its exciting plans for the future, I immediately knew this was something that I wanted to become involved with. The GAAP Education Centre will make a real difference to the lives of children who have not had a good start in life, so I urge you to join me in supporting such a worthwhile cause.”

Peter and the GAAP fundraising team will be launching a series of fundraising opportunities in the coming months – including auctions and charity events. So stay posted with what GAAP is doing through its brand new website at www.gaaporphanage.org.uk and through regular updates on Twitter @GaapOrphanageF or Facebook /GaapOrphanage. Anyone wishing to make a donation or become a regular supporter can donate via the website.
